We’re going to try and do the impossible in this week’s blog; name the most beautiful places in the Balkans. OK, so it’s not possible, but here’s our list of five places you should definitely add to your bucket list and any Balkan beauty land tour.
Slovenia - Julian Alps
Named by Lonely Planet as one of the top 10 regions to visit in 2018, the Julian Alps are a green haven with two thirds protected by the Triglav National Park. Whether you’re a hiker, mountaineer, picnicker or lake swimmer, the Julian Alps will offer you some of the most breathtaking backdrops for your favorite leisure activities.
Croatia - Plitvice Lakes National Park
Regularly featuring on lists of the world’s most beautiful parks, the Plitvice Lakes are an inland gem that shouldn’t be missed in Croatia. Situated in the mountainous Gorski Kotar region, the National Park covers almost 115 square miles of wooded area including 16 lakes. The cascading lakes are divided into 12 Upper and 4 Lower Lakes, all encircled with walking paths that lead through the woods, along the lakes, caves and mesmerizing, seemingly never-ending, array of waterfalls that culminate with the Great Waterfall.
Montenegro - Perast
This small town is often described as a small Venice and is home to 19 palaces and 17 churches. The Baroque architecture of the town is framed perfectly by the stunning backdrop of St. Elijah hill and two beautiful islets just off its shores. Along every stretch of the town’s coast you’ll find a picture-perfect moment.
Macedonia - Lake Ohrid
Not only the deepest lake in the Balkans, Lake Ohrid is one of the oldest settlements in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the old town filled with beautiful churches and wander the cobbled streets discovering delicious local cuisine and wines along the way. The lake itself straddles the mountainous region between Macedonia and Albania so prepare to be in awe of the incredible vistas.
Bosnia and Herzegovina – Hutovo Blato Nature Park
Hutovo Blato Nature Park is a unique Mediterranean swamp, and one of the largest wintering places for birds in Europe. Located in the south west of Bosnia and Herzegovina on the left bank of the Neretva River, its bird reserve is a must see for all outdoor enthusiasts.
